Old Boys Day

Old Boys Day

The annual Old Boys Day was held on Saturday 12th August and was a step back in time to when the First XV match was played at the school.  With both Rugby and Basketball being held on the day against old rival St Joseph’s, Nudgee College, the event saw Old Boys ‘Return to the Hill’ en masse and reminisce with their friends and share stories of when they were students of the school.

Even though the school boasts some of the best sporting facilities amongst the Queensland GPS schools, many of the Old Boys hold true to the fact that Number 4 Oval back at the school is the traditional home for Rugby at IGS. Stories flowed of close finishes, long held rivalries and notable players from their respective eras.

Engaging in the day by sharing the coin toss were two Old Boy athletes who have achieved success at an elite level. John Brown (Class of 1959) represented Queensland in both Cricket and Rugby League while Shambeckler Vui (Class of 2014) was an Australian Schoolboy and Under 20s rugby representative and has gone on to play for the Western Force. Both Old Boys appreciated the opportunity to be a part of the day.

The afternoon saw the First V Basketballers have a convincing 19  point win and a strong audience were on hand to enjoy the win and cheer them on. Buoyed by their success and running out in front of a large crowd of enthusiastic Old Boys, the First XV went into their match with a large amount of confidence and fought hard against their opposition. Unfortunately there were some lapses in defence and they were eventually defeated. Whilst not a win on the scoreboard the Old Boys saw the day as a great success in comradery and spirit for the Old Boys of Ipswich Grammar.
