Old Boy living the Volleyball dream

Tom Wheeler (Class of 2016) has continued with his volleyball post graduation and taken his playing career to the next level after securing a position at the Australian Institute of Sport at the end of 2016. A stint in their volleyball program prepared Wheeler for scholarship opportunity in Canada where he has just returned to Australia to enjoy their summer break.

Playing for the Grande Prairie College Wolves Wheeler had a stand out first season and took out the College’s Volleyballer of the Year and Rookie Athlete of the Year. Wheeler rates himself being very fortunate being able to pursue his volleyball career goals whilst gaining his tertiary education.

“Its a thing you dream of, to play sport and get incentives from it,” he said.

Wheeler has continued to hone his skills and remain fit in preparation for his next college year to ensure he continues his form from his rookie year. His goals of achieving Australian representative status in the senior ranks have begun in the best possible fashion but he acknowledges that he would only be in this position due to the support and encouragement of his former school.

“Without Ipswich Grammar I wouldn’t be playing volleyball. I love this school. I’ll always identify as an Old Boy, it won’t ever leave me.”
