Deng break 50 year old record

Joseph Deng (Class of 2016) has broken the Australian 800m in a Diamond League athletics event held in Monaco. Deng’s time of 1min 44.21 seconds beat the 50 year old record of 1:44.40. The original time was set by gold medalist Ralph Doubell at the 1968 Olympics held in Mexico City and equaled 46 years later by Alex Rowe in Monaco.

Deng has been working hard in with coach Justin Rinaldi in chasing the record since representing Australia in the Commonwealth Games earlier this year on the Gold Coast.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Deng. “My target coming into the race wasn’t the record, it was just to run fast.”

The meet was the final race for Deng this European season and he will now return to Australia.
